Thanks to the brilliant and vigilant @ManoMarks, we may have our first Story Scout lead!
In his infinite wisdom, Mano shared a link to an Ars Technica story, How to Brew Ancient Wari Beer. As a close friend and reliable drinking buddy, he knew we both love beer, that Scott and I brew beer together, and that Scott is the author of Strong Waters, a how-to book about making old-school booze at home.
In addition, he knew that the ancient Wari beer was a predecessor of chicha, a fermented corn beverage that is still popular in Peru. He knew that Scott and I have made chica at home from corn we sprouted, and that I have researched and written about native corn in Mexico. He also knew that we would be in Peru in a month’s time.
What he didn’t know is that an archaeologist featured in the story teaches at my graduate school alma mater, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Neither did I, until I read the article. Upon noticing the connection, I immediately composed an email to Professor Donna Nash, requesting a phone interview. She responded within the hour, begging off on the phone call until grading season is over. But she said she would be in the Wari region of Peru for the summer, including the two weeks we are planning to be in and around Cusco, which is within striking distance of the ancient Wari Empire.
I shall report back after connecting with Dr. Nash.
I hope to eventually blog about making this ancient brew with women of Wari descent. Let the adventures begin!
